As I was walking down from shooting the Air Downhill race, a bunch of the guys were sessioning some of the features on the Slopstyle course trying to get lines figured out for Saturday's contest. Darren Berrecloth and Justin Wyper were looking at this wall ride for some time, after Stephanie Nychka attempted it during Womensworx. Everyone else stood around watching. Eventually Justin decided to be the guinea pig and go for it, and managed to almost fly off the top of the wall. Darren was then the second one to ride it.

I hope I didn't startle any of the riders, this photo is taken with the camera mounted on the end of a 3m carbon-fiber pole, which I had lifted up in the air to get right beside them. Worked for me though!

The fog in the trees come race morning was incredible, and eerie. After rain the day before, the fog threatened the weather, but the waterworks held off all day and skies even cleared a bit in the afternoon.

A lot goes into the organization of a BC Cup race. The course gets flagged, repaired, and buffed to perfection. There are 8 martial stations on this course staffed by volunteers with radios and whistles, helping keep things running smoothly and responding to any issues that might arise. Plus another 3 first aid stations.Officials from Cycling BC marshall the start and finish, using laser triggered timing. Here, we wait as the final few pieces of preparation are laid in, before beginning practice runs on race day.

Met up with Laura and Sarah in the Seymour parking lot and got a wicked lap in, with 25 minutes left over to finish packing, have a shower, and meet my taxi!

This photo is from the first day of the conference, when a few of us went down the street for a sandwich. I had begun to meet some great people at the conference, and we were sharing our experiences and ideas.

Carlisle, a Bay Area local, brought us into The Musical Offering, a great cafe/music shop.

While it is true that a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, the first step for this trip doesn't actually involve any movement at all. It instead involves much planning, cleanup, organizing, e-mailing, mapping, and much else. Over the last few days while getting ready for final university exams, I've been busily trying to organize this trip, and my life. All the piles of junk collected over the past four years have to go somewhere, the gear I need for the summer has to get out west, things I don't use any more need to be gotten rid of, and everything else... well figuring out what to do with it is the hard part.

So even though we're not on the road yet, and won't be for another month or so, I think it's time to start documenting the experience. Here is a photo I took this afternoon while I was running around getting things moved, packed, and organized. I realized too late that I had already been taking down all my posters, hadn't done laundry, and was overall pretty disorganized, but I guess that's the point. Anyways, here's what my life looks like right now.

The Google Earth Blog recently announced that Google Earth had updated its imagery for Whistler, so I flew in, and thought it would be cool to create a 360 from just above the village. I have done a few VR photos from Google Earth before, but never this close because the resolution wasn't that great.

A good friend of mine, Glen Leck, invited me to come to one of his shows at On The Verge in Wolfville, to take a few photos. I found myself a spot in the front row, stuck up my camera, and grabbed this shot.

I was flying around Google Earth again the other day, and decided to put together another panorama. Here we are flying 1km above Vancouver, BC.

At 4am we rumbled out of bed, motivated by the trip that lay ahead of us. The six of us hopped in our limo to head down to Halifax and meet the other 12 people in our group, for a week long, all-inclusive, vacation to the Dominican Republic. Of course, some mimosas to celebrate.

It was not until the sun started rising that the energy really starts coming out! Junkanoo is a twice annually celebration of the holiday season, once on boxing day, and again here on New Years Day. Teams sponsored by organizations in the community work all year preparing elabourate costumes made out of all sorts of materials, choreographing dance and music, and mustering spirit, for this intense competition.

This intense sound of cowbells, brass instruments, and every drum imaginable, has inspired a global music genre by the same name, and Junkanoo music can now be heard in many cities, and many festivals.

Sitting along the harbour of Paradise Island, just across from Nassau, Bahamas, at midnight the sights and sounds are overwhelming. A countdown from the bar, passing yachts' horns, and the fireworks all along the shores of Altantis and Cable Beach.

After taking a fun photo at the Marsh Harbour airport, I thought I would try to do the same thing in Nassau. Not sure what the response would be like from security here, I was worried about being stopped and questioned. Luckily, I had no problems, and managed to bring back these photos.

At the end of our stay on Abaco we returned to the airport at Marsh Harbour. Dissapointed to be leaving, I decided to snap one last set of photos at the airport. I wonder after taking this photo what a security guard at a Canadian or US airport would have done.

With so many nooks to explore on this incredible island, it is definitely a place that deserves a return trip. This is essentially the, "downtown," of Green Turtle Cay, my kind of pace!

One of our first stops on Green Turtle Cay had to be a beach-side bar where we could test out the local rum punch, and formulate a plan for our day. Here they are cracking some conch (one of my favourite Bahamian dishes, anything including conch), and enjoying the sun.

It is not difficult to find your very own private secluded beach on this out-island. We hadn't gone more than 10m off the cart path to get to this part of one of the north side beaches.

While exploring Green Turtle Cay by golf cart, we ventured to the far end of the island, to where the Bluff House resort is located. Though quiet during this season, it is still a beautiful area.

We arrived on Green Turtle Cay by a short ferry ride, and were greeted by a quiet, warm, harbour town. Before long we had rented a golf cart, and were exploring the rest of the island.

While waiting for the ferry across from Treasure Cay to Green Turtle Cay, we explored this "VIP Lounge". Despite it's appearance, it seems like a pretty good place to hang out to me.

My family and I enjoyed a short trip for a few days over to the out-island of Abaco, to the north of Nassau. We stayed for three nights at the Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina and this was the worst weather we had the whole time!

Sir Harry Oakes was an entrepreneurial gold miner who made his millions when he discovered the gold beneath Kirkland Lake. Oakes settled in Nassau with his Australian wife (for tax purposes), and was brutally murdered in 1943. We visited the reamins of his house with friends, and I captured this photo from what would have been somewhere on the second floor of the house.

This is also my first creation of a black and white panorama. I found the lighting in the photos was very difficult, so decided to go with the black and white processing to gain more contrast and depth in the scene.

Most nights during our stay with my grandmother in Nassau we were given a spectacular sunset. Before dinner tonight I wandered down to the docks to capture this exceptional sunset.

To capture the complex light of this scene, I had to take several photos and blend them together using a High Dynamic Range processes.

This is my first Christmas where I have to jump in the pool at least once a day... Most years our family is skiing somewhere in Canada, so this is quite a break from that norm. We are here in the Bahamas for 10 days visiting my grandmother who moved down several years ago.

After creating a recent panorama from images out of Google Earth over Treasure Cay, in the Bahamas, I decided to try it out somewhere else. This is up in the air above Camp Summit, where I've spent my last 5 summers.

Both this and the previous panorama were created using the advice and techniques provided by Dr Andrew Hudson-Smith on his blog. Andrew is at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London.

This is a new direction for me, creating my first panorama completely digitally. In this panorama you are 100m above Treasure Cay, on the island of Abaco, in the Bahamas. I captured the land photos in Google Earth, and then generated the sky in Terragen, the entire image is computer generated. Pretty cool I think, this can be assembled in any location, creating a perspective from the sky otherwise only possible with a helicopter or other expensive technique. This could provide a visualization of what it might be like to look out of a skyscraper, future hotel, or just a recreational flight.

Now I'm looking forward to visiting the island and creating some real panoramas!

The Acadia Art Cooperative is a new student organization at Acadia this year, bringing together artists in the community from different disciplines to share and work toegether. I was asked to run a digital imaging workshop, and we decided to work on creating panoramic photos. I took a set of photos and worked through the entire process of creating panormic photos including photography, image processing, stitching, blending, and retouching. Everyone in the group was able to follow along with this same set of photos, taken at the beginning of our workshop.

To assemble these photos, I shared with the group some fantastic open-source (read: free) software that we used throughout the workshop:

• Panotools (re-projecting and blending framework, the foundation of advanced panoramic photography)
• Hugin (a great visual panoramic image interface for PanoTools)
• AutoPano-SIFT (control point generator)
• Enblend (a powerful blender for matching the seams between stitched images)

Here is a variation of a Camp Summit classic game of, "Stones," this time with six teams, all competing to steal the other team's stones in a capture the flag style play.

I just recently found these images again, and I'm really excited about this panorama, I think it shows a lot of the energy and fun we have at Summit!

Just outside of Shanghai, in Nantong, we visited Cathay's riverside plantations. These are one year old, and will be ready for harvest in four or five years.

This stop on our journey took us out of Nunavut, and into Nunavik, the Arctic region of Quebec. Ivujivik is the northern most community in Quebec, and although it has the coldest climate in the province I think it has some of the warmest people. We were greeted by residents and children from the village, who were anxious to help us pull our boats ashore, and then tour us through their village.

Digges Island was a wonderful stop for exploring, with many cultural remains. We worked in and around many ancient tent circles, food caches, and justice circles. This is directly over what is thought to be an ancient food cache, which even has the remains of several animal's bones directly below.

Our stop in Kimmiruit was incredibly culturally rich. We experienced a seal being skinned and cleaned, cooking of traditional bannock, drum dancing, throat singing, and this wonderful cultural centre.

One of our visits in Iqaluit was to the beautiful Legislature buildings. I was incredibly impressed by the facilities, and their capacity to incorporate so many traditional values into a modern facility.

During our first afternoon in Iqaluit we were on a quest to find an Inukshuk overlooking Frobisher Bay. Our lovely taxi driver from Quebec led us around for the afternoon (and also fed us the wild blueberries she would pick at every stop).

Here are some of my first images from Nunavut. We arrived in Iqaluit and promptly lost our luggage... It was intercepted when it came off the plane and was loaded into a truck that was taking all of the luggage to the Pier. This created some issues for us, considering we were hoping to work all afternoon before boarding the ship. We were able to catch up with our luggage here at the pier, and get some incredible images over the afternoon.

This is a VR photo I created for Camp Summit, to include on their facilities web site. You can find that web site here: http://www.campsummit.ca/sc/facilities.html To create this image I captured 9 different photos, of varying exposures, which are then blended together to capture a more tone-realistic image. This technique can compensate for the limited dynamic range of cameras, and get closer to the images we can see with our eyes.

The third day of our trip we packed up our camp and begun the hike out. Just after leaving our campground we passed over these bridges and rivers, flowing down from the snowcaps and glaciers.

Our first night at the lake campground I decided to try and capture some photos of the stars, since it was such a clear, beautiful night. I tried a few long exposures, and then decided I wanted to try a full 360 degree panorama of the sky. I set up my camera on the tripod and started taking photos. This is made up of 5 photos, each with a 5 minute exposure, so the whole sky has some star trails (you can even pick out Polaris if you look carefully). I am quite happy with how this turned out, and hope you enjoy it.

While preparing for some staff training at camp, we got to talking to Lucas about some of his trials biking experience. He has been a trials biker for many years, and so we requested a demonstration. Before long, he had decided how we could put together a cool line, most importantly incorporating our Cool Bus.

The latest edition of the World Wide Panorama is themed Gardens.

This photo is taken in the new garden at Camp Summit, and actually shows several gardens. First, the actual garden we are standing in, growing our own fruit and vegetables. We started this garden only a few weeks ago, and it has seen lots of care from Tara (the one watering the plants) and Emily (the one weeding in the other corner).

The second garden is camp. We all work at an outdoor adventure camp for kids, where we strive to present our campers with challenges and opportunities to grow and learn. Tara runs our leadership programs for 17 year olds, Emily is our head instructor, and I am a cabin counsellor and rock climbing instructor. Through camp and the amazing resources we have in the area we are able to provide an incredible experiential education for kids from all over the world.

This is the low ropes challenge course at Camp Summit, where participants must move through the course using the elements and the support of their group.

This is the first photograph from a series we are assembling to share the property and facilities we have here at Camp Summit. The final products will be incorporated into the camp web site. This photo was also fun because it is one of the first real tests I have done of a high dynamic range image. This is where I have taken 3 sets of photographs, at varying exposures (one underexposed, one over) and combined them to create more detail in the highlight and shadow areas of the photos. I'm quite happy with how this turned out, and am sure that I will begin using more HDR techniques in my workflow in the future.

The Rockstar Downhill race is part of the annual Test of Metal weekend, where Squamish locals test their metal and rip down one of Squamish's classic downhill trails.

This is one of a few photos I stumbled upon from the summer just recently, and decided to post up. They are one of the first times I tried doing a handheld panorama extended with a tripod. There was so much going on that day, so they're not quite perfect. I have not fixed up all of the seams and errors, but wanted to post them anyways, just to share, and illustrate the concept again of capturing action sequences within panoramas. I had a lot of fun with the day, and I hope you enjoy these images.

The Test of Metal is a legendary cross country mountain bike race in Squamish. Competitors must push themselves over 67km of classic Squamish trails. The fastest time came in just under 2 hours and 45 minutes, while some are still grinding after almost 7 hours.

Here is a photograph from Cox Bay, near Tofino, on Vancouver Island. Our camp spring staff all went to the island for the weekend to relax and surf. I tried surfing for the first time ever, and managed to even stand up on a few rides! I was so sore and tired the next day though I decided to take it easy, and took a few photos.

It's very rewarding to be back in BC, and amazing to have the great opportunities to bike, hike, climb, and experience the outdoors. At first opportunity I joined fellow Summit staff Stefan Vali for an amazing bike ride up through some classic Squamish trails. I brought my camera, hoping to work on some action photography, and this is the product. We began our ride with what is left of Ed's Bypass, down to Rob's Corners, Cliff's Corners, the end of Don't Tell Jude, and then Roller Coaster. This is in from the middle of one of Cliff's Corners.

Recently, I was asked by VRMag to contribute to an article, "Farewell to Winter," which will be published online at the end of April, 2006. VRMag is an online magazine featuring some of the world's top virtual reality photographers, showcasing the work they are doing, the latest equipment and techniques, and events. I was asked to contribute the panroama I created from our front porch here when we were having a less-than-ideal winter, with minimal snow, rain, and unseasonably high temperatures. I agreed to submit that photo, but also decided that I had better show people that Wolfville isn't always like that. I went out today (beautiful, 20C and sunny) and created this.

Acadia University this winter hosted their third annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life. The relay was organized by Meg Badun and Kat Jurecki, and took place in Acadia University's athlitic complex. The relay is in support of Cancer research, and the luminaries located around the arena are in honour and memory of those that have had to fight cancer. Through events like this we will be able to support cancer research and eventually make cancer history.

The 2nd International Beer Festival, hosted by the Axe Lounge and Acadia's "Thirsty Student". This festival featured 26 beers from around the world. A great event organized by all the Axe Lounge staff and the Thirsty Student, thanks to all who made this a great event, and allowing my photography of the night.

This is a photograph component of a project displaying the space inside the Arena. So much of the qualities of the space are derived from the activities that take place in it, so many of them are captured in the photograph. You can see faint hockey player, kids, and adults skating around.

Nova Scotia has had a difficult winter, not because of tremendous amounts of snow (which is the norm) but because of variable temperatures, rain, and ice. This time of year would normally have several feet of snow on our lawn, but currently it is above 0 and raining. While this is a bit easier to deal with around town, it's killing our chances of skiing and the likes.

Update: I was recently asked to submit this panorama for an article being assembled by VRMag, "Farewell to Winter," which will be released at the end of April, 2006.

This is a VR I shot for a real estate site that will be renting out this apartment in Beaune, eastern France. The full tour of this apartment is online at: http://beaune.housser.ca/

This is so far one of my best days of skiing for 2006. We spent a few days with my family in the French alps skiing, and I shot this photograph on a spectacular sunny day up in the mountains.

Here is a view of the square immediately outside out appartment in Beaune. A few people walking around and driving by give this scene a little bit of the nighttime energy that the square has. A uique look for the area, which rarely gets snow like this.

This christmas I was lucky enough to get to travel to France with my family. This is a photo taken in the middle of Beaune, where several pedestrian only streets converged. They do not typically get much snow in this area, so it was a treat and made for some interesting photographs.
